Alternative ridges and faces accompanied by the Guides of Cervino
Discover Authentic Mountaineering on the Symbol of the Alps
Beyond the celebrated Italian and Swiss normal routes, the Matterhorn (4,478 m) conceals a network of lesser-known, more technical, and solitary lines.
These alternative routes are reserved for experienced alpinists seeking a true adventure – great climbs immersed in an extraordinary alpine setting.
The secondary ridges and faces of the Matterhorn embody the purest spirit of classic mountaineering: mixed terrain, exposure, isolation, and the deep connection between guide and client.
Such ascents demand a high technical level, solid experience at altitude, and absolute mutual trust. For this reason, they are usually offered only to clients already known to our guides or after a prior assessment on similar terrain.
Selected Routes – Beyond the Normal Route
🔹 De Amicis Ridge (from Pic Tyndall)
An elegant and logical line on the Italian side, set on solid rock and within a magnificent alpine environment. Rarely repeated, it offers a complete, authentic, and highly rewarding climb.
🔹 Furggen Ridge
The most demanding and historic ridge of the Matterhorn – steep, exposed, and technically intricate. With challenging rock sections and sustained commitment throughout, it is a route for only the strongest of teams and a true test of alpinism.
🔹 South Face – Carabinieri Spur / Route of the Overhangs
Pure granite climbing on red and yellow rock, requiring mountaineering experience and confidence on grades of around V/V+ in a high-mountain setting.
🔹 North Face – Schmidt Route and Variants
A great Alpine classic on ice and mixed terrain. Complex, technical, and profoundly satisfying – a climb to be attempted only in the best conditions and at the right moment.
To venture onto one of the Matterhorn’s alternative routes is not merely a mountaineering achievement, but a deep journey into the history and spirit of the mountain.
The Cervino Guides’ intimate knowledge of the terrain, combined with the trust that unites guide and climber, makes this a unique and truly unforgettable experience.
